Rook Ready vs. SwissSys

Your pairing program doesn't run your club.

SwissSys pairs a great tournament — it has since 1988. But the roster, the parents, attendance, registration, and dues all live somewhere else. Rook Ready is one cloud platform for the whole club, with rated events built in.

Free for clubs up to 30 members. No credit card.

The short version

A pairing engine, not club software.

SwissSys is a desktop pairing program with a 35-year track record — the tool that's run the US Open, the World Open, and tens of thousands of events. ChessRoster, its newer cloud layer, adds online registration, payments, and live results for players. Together they run a rated tournament well.

What they don't do is run the club. Who's on the roster, which parent gets the email, who showed up to Tuesday practice, who's paid their dues, what's on the calendar next month — none of that is what a pairing program is for. Most organizers keep that in a spreadsheet beside SwissSys. Rook Ready is the club platform that also runs the rated event — so it's all one system.

Where SwissSys still wins

Don't switch your pairing engine yet.

If your job is running a large, high-stakes over-the-board event, SwissSys (or WinTD) is the proven call. Three and a half decades of USCF pairing-correctness trust, a desktop app that never drops because the gym has no Wi-Fi, and a one-time license you own forever — that's a real, earned advantage.

Here's the thing: most clubs aren't running the World Open. They're running weekly meetings, a roster of kids and parents, a season of events, dues — and a rated tournament now and then. That's the part SwissSys was never built for, and the part Rook Ready does best. Plenty of organizers will keep SwissSys for the big rated events and run everything else — the whole club — on Rook Ready.
