How to delete your account

There are three ways, and they all end in the same place. You do not need to reinstall the app to use any of them.

What happens straight away

• You are signed out everywhere and can no longer sign in.
• You lose access to every club, tournament and event you were part of.
• Your profile stops being visible to the clubs you belonged to.

You have 30 days to undo it

We email you a link that restores the account. It works once, and it expires 30 days after you delete. Until then nothing is erased — the account is simply closed and hidden.

What is erased after 30 days

Once the 30 days are up, the restore link stops working and this is permanent:

• Your name, email address, phone number and date of birth are erased.
• Your password, sign-in sessions and any two-factor settings are erased.
• The private notes and custom-field answers on your club roster entries are erased.
• Your roster entry in each club you belonged to is renamed to "Removed Member".

What your clubs keep

We are straight with you about this bit, because it is the part people are surprised by: a club's history is the club's, and deleting your account does not erase games that were played or evenings that were attended. Your name comes off it — but read the last two points if you have played rated chess, because a rating ID is not something we can take back.

• The clubs you belonged to keep their own record of what happened — attendance, event registrations and tournament results. It stays listed under "Removed Member" rather than your name.
• The answers you gave on a tournament entry or registration form stay with that entry, along with any note a director added to it.
• If you played rated chess with us, the rating ID you gave — your US Chess or FIDE number — stays on those tournament records, because a result cannot be rated without it. That number is public at the rating body and points at your name there, so deleting your Rook Ready account does not make those games anonymous.
• Rating bodies such as US Chess hold their own copy of any result a director submitted to them, under their rules rather than ours. We cannot withdraw it on your behalf.
• We take backups — our hosting provider snapshots the servers your data lives on — and a copy of your data survives in them for a while after it is erased from the live system. We have not confirmed how long the provider keeps a snapshot, so we are not putting a number on it here rather than publish a retention window we cannot stand behind.
• Anonymized usage analytics, which are not linked to you, may be kept to improve the product.
